The Town

Surprisingly deep for a movie about bank robbers. Ben Affleck directs, and acts, wonderfully in this slightly cerebral action film.

Set in Charlestown, Boston, Mass, “the bank robbing capitol of the US”, the plot moves steadily along. The characters are charming in a way that makes them irresistible, but not someone who you would bring home to mommy.

Closing: Not the usual mindless action flick. Unique in its honesty, as well as its costume design, The Town is a story of bad men you’ll love. Despite the accolades, wait until its out on DVD.

A Single Man

Deliciously creepy opening, the scene paired with the music with a heavy emphasis on the naked man’s body. The death of Falconer’s boyfriend is actually quite graphic. George is portrayed as a very well dressed man to mask is depression and apparent lack of feeling toward everyone that isn’t him. “Bit melodramatic, I know.” Vagrant use of flashbacks for back story and remembrance of time’s past.

Theme: Living in the past/moving forward/living in the now.

To look for: When George is happy the color palette changes to a vibrant, sometimes over saturated mix of yellows and red (highly interested in the subject’s lips and eyes), when George is sad/depressed the color is dim, almost black and white.

Most likely this story is set in the 1960’s.

The music increases tempo as the plot moves along, the bigger the realization from George, the faster the pace of the orchestra. Falconer’s worst and best moments are completely silent.

Best lines: Little boy is shooting a gun at George, “Would you like it if I killed you?” The little boy shrugs and mumbles. “Why don’t you run home and stop shooting people, or we’re going to find out.”

Charly is a brilliantly useless character. The story could have moved on without her, but would never have been as good either.

Closing: This movie is artistic to the point of brilliance. Fantastically scripted and acted, every little details was accounted for (I appreciate that immensely). Beautifully heart wrenching ending.
